I really hate writing any NEGATIVE review. I had faith for this shelter but sadly was VERY disappointed. # 1 The adopted cats legs smelled/stank of his own urine, which I quickly cleaned. # 2 Truth is the cat I adopted was "said" to be fellow cat "friendly". That was NOT the case. It attacked the older resident cat even after a proper gradual introduction. I said whom ever socialized this cat failed. That comment was dismissed quickly and she tried to blame my introduction skills, more than once, not knowing ALL the cats I've owned during the many years. Sadly after bonding w/ this otherwise great cat, I had to return it for THEIR anti social mistake. Then after the original adoption no refund policy fee they had the nerve to charge me and additional $35.00 to return the cat back !!! = When it was returned, I asked "if" I could adopt another cat there and I was refused as she rolled her eyes as "if" now, I no longer qualified, aka like I did something wrong? (???!!!) = LIKE WOW = Two weeks later, in the returned new cats relisting ad, it stated "has to be the only cat". Yes, someone really dropped the ball and YES = I paid for it. I just wonder how many poor good heart others get/got caught up this "return" for even more $$$ game and never write/say a thing and just write it off as Oh well ? SMH = Sadly I'm sure I'm long forgotten by now but boy be sure ALL my funds were quickly taken and never returned for their mistake. >>> = PLEASE JUST BE AWARE !!! THEY WILL LIE TO MOVE A TROUBLED CAT = <<< Both cats in the picture are NOT the shelter cat but proves how social my resident cat was previously. Now after being attacked by their shelter cat it has taken many months to get the fear of ALL cats of my residential cat. SMH !!!
We live in the neighborhood and couldn't be more grateful for Second Hand Purrs in our lives. We've expanded our family and adopted on 2 separate occasions (Parker and Trooper). We love everything they do for our furry friends, and we gladly help support them in return when we can.
We adopted Bill and Ted in November 2021. The process was easy but thorough. We got to play with them and visit a few times before bringing them home. These Wyld Stallyns are great mousers! The staff is AMAZING!
This cat shelter does outstanding work. We fostered two kittens (brothers) when the Covid pandemic began. We had never done it before but they coached us thoroughly on how to foster the kittens. It was amazing to watch their growth from being feral and fearful kittens to loving, affectionate, and adoptable kittens. They do all they can to make sure siblings are adopted together, and the kittens (now cats) are doing very well in their new home together. They even share updates with the foster parent when available. It's amazing to watch the person who runs the shelter do her work -- you can tell she's passionate and knows her stuff. Though we currently can't foster, we donate to them when we can. Keep up the amazing work!
We adopted our cat Stella(Payne20) from here and I was really impressed with the care they give the cats. They also do a thorough background check and interview before adopting the cats out so they know they're going to good homes.
In the past I had fostered for Second Hand Purrs and it was a really great experience! It was hard to give the kittens back, but seeing the entire process made me feel so much better. The volunteers are amazing and quite a few have been there for years. I know first hand that they keep it very clean inside, with cages, floors, kitten room and constant laundry. Their adoption process really eased my mind. They charge a fee because the cats are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. This also helps fund the shelter and all of the medical expenses. I believe it helps determine if someone is really ready to take on the commitment of adopting a cat or kitten. They do a home check, and determine if adopting is going to be a good fit or not for someone. I think this is wonderful because they are looking out for the care and safety of their cats. With a humane society it always worries me if an animal will get a good home or not with no background checking. I turned out to be a foster failure, but highly recommend Second Hand Purrs!! If you are able to foster or adopt, this enables them to rescue more cats/kittens.
We went there to donate food at the recommendation of a friend. The employees were nice and let us look around. The cats appeared well cared for and the place was clean. There were several young volunteers helping out and being educated. I was impressed during my short visit there. It's easy to criticize when you don't understand how humane societies and rescues work, and the difficulties, limitations and heartbreak they face on a daily basis. My friend and I worked for many years at a humane society and I used to grit my teeth when people would say they could never work there "because I love animals too much." Huh? Good job, Second Hand Purrs, and keep it up.
We adopted our beloved cat Banjo from Second Hand Purrs in the summer of 2018. They clearly care very much about their cats and work to keep them happy and healthy. Banjo is very well-behaved and was obviously given a lot of attention before we got him. He loves to play fight but never too hard. He makes every day better and we are endlessly thankful to Second Hand Purrs for bringing Banjo into our lives!
